Yesterday we did some exploring at night (as well as a lot of Interneting during the day) so here is the mostly photo based post
The Wheel of Brisbane at sundown. This was originally built for Seaworld near the Gold Coast, but it was too big, so the Council bought it!
Arty shot down the South Bank
I can't remember what these ships are but they looked impressive in drydock
And now I'm really going for arty shots!
Oh look they lit up the Wheel
I was perfectly safe at all times! There were 3 of us walking alone in the woods near the river at night!
We turned our attention to long exposure stuff, on DSCs! I didn't have a tripod. I need a better camera!
The Wheel is the star of the show
Best shot of the night!
We headed back towards home but stopped at select spots on the South Bank again
Back at Streets Beach they turned the lights on
One more shot of that great wheel!
There was one more thing that deserves a mention. HBK. Standing for Hayley’s Burger Kitchen!!! Damn she can cook a good burger!
Today I’m looking to move on either North or South, not sure where yet.
So today we headed for the Gold Coast, specifically Surfers Paradise. This is easier than it seems for a day trip. It was a 1 hour direct train from South Brisbane! iPod and reading time for all!
When we got there, these newspaper headlines annoyed me:
STOP CREATING PANIC!
But then we leapt on the bus and I started to get a feel for the place. You see you think of “Surfers Paradise” as being this deserted beach with a few places to eat and drink but mostly left to nature and the waves… what you find is…
The beach is bigger than it looks here. There is a large slope that is facing away from the camera.
This was up having a great time!
It’s a very commercialised place where you are not expecting it. Designer brands, big shopping centres, high rises, plenty of money floating around (or there was at least). Alan and Hayley stayed in another area of the Gold Coast when they first arrived and they said that Surfers is a bit removed from it. They also said that their friends said they had seen the downturn hit the place.
Still, Starbucks did a good tea and I got some new boardshorts for AUD30/£15! A good day was had, although we disagreed about the temperature! I thought it was for the most part warm but I was in the minority, look at those photos!
We’ve headed back to Brisbane now, dinner, Dave Gorman’s Googlewhack Adventure and now the FA Cup Final!
Out of bed early and heading to Newcastle Airport to get my flight I booked 12 hours before! On my way to Brisbane!
When I got there I went straight into “I’m getting a flight mode”, an uncontrollable state where I ignore the ample time I have and assume every moment not spent proceeding to the gate is the moment that will make me miss the flight! I think this was not impressing Tracey!
Anyway, it turns out you can take as much liquid as you like onto domestic flights from Newcastle, it’s just they are not that keen on you taking screwdrivers that you have forgotten to take out of your wash bag on there!
Slept the whole way on my private row of 3 eats on the way up.
Once I got to Brisbane I jumped on the AirTrain and bee lined for South Brisbane, stopping only to grab a sarnie to stop starvation! When I get off the train I’m looking at a great city centre location and Alan and Hayley coming towards me! It’s great to see them after months, and to see them again now they are on the other side of the planet!
Their flat is amazing! Brand new and great spot! We headed straight out to explore the South Bank!
They are copying another south bank I know well…
But doing it better I think
We headed for Streets Beach, an artificial beach with an outdoor pool, real sand and quite packed for the end of May (think the end of November in the UK, it’s winter here!). A rather cold swim later we went back to the flat, got changed and hit the CBD.
We headed for the flat again and Hayley cooked up a great pasta bake for dinner! We put on some stand up but me and Alan decided we felt like going out to find some bars, which we did! 1 Aussie Pub and 2 Irish Bars!!?
